Hawaii?

As we gear up for our year abroad in 2026, our family of seven is buzzing with excitement and a touch of uncertainty. January’s destination is set for Hawaii, a place that holds deep significance for us, but planning this leg of the journey (the first leg!) is proving to be our toughest challenge yet. With hotels and AirBnBs too costly for an extended stay, we’ve explored WWOOFing opportunities—connecting with organic farmers who host volunteers—but haven’t secured a spot. Accommodating a large family adds complexity, and we’re starting to consider alternate locations.

Hawaii isn’t just a destination for us — it’s been a “hinge” point in our family’s story twice before and we have a special connection to it. In 2005, we attended YWAM in Honolulu and did our outreach India. After our time there, it became clear that God was redirecting our path back to Canada for a time. In 2010, escaping Vancouver’s Olympic chaos, we found ourselves in Hawaii again, where I felt called to pursue a career in law. These moments have woven a special bond with the islands, and we long to share this meaningful place with our children.

As we navigate these hurdles, we’re leaning on God for guidance. We’re praying for clarity, open doors, and provision—or for God to gently redirect us if Hawaii isn’t where we’re meant to be. Your prayers are appreciated as we seek direction for the first chapter of our adventure. Whether it’s Hawaii or an unexpected path, we trust God’s plan will unfold, shaping memories and milestones for our family.
